If you’ve ever had a dental crown, fixed bridge, or other advanced restoration, you more than likely had to visit the dentist at least two times. At Paige Prather Smiles, we use the CEREC same day dental restoration system to repair damage or decay in a single appointment. CEREC stands for chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics, and it’s a computer assisted design and manufacture system that allows us to compress the entire dental restoration process into a single visit in our Franklin, TN dental office. Dr. Paige Prather has advanced training that allows her to provide CEREC restoration of the same quality as those custom crowns and bridges available with the help of our trusted dental labs. In the past, placing a dental crown required two appointments in our Franklin, TN dental office. At the first visit, we prepared the damaged tooth by removing structure to allow space for the dental crown to fit over the top of the tooth. We’ll also smooth and shape any dental structure as necessary to allow the crown to sit snuggly within the smile line. Next, we’ll take a bite impression that will be used by the dental lab to create your crown. Impressions are captured by having patients bite down on putty that fills in the tooth’s crevices and creates a direct reflection of the tooth’s structure. Finally, we’ll place a temporary dental crown to protect the tooth until the final restoration arrives. When we receive your custom crafted crown from the dental lab, you’ll return for you second visit. During this appointment, we remove the temporary crown and replace it with the custom solution. This process is effective, but the CEREC system allows us to streamline restorations to just one office visit.
The CEREC process is essentially the same as traditional crown restoration, except it’s completed in a single appointment. Using advanced computer assisted design and manufacture (CAD/CAM) technology, CEREC puts the ability to design, mill, and place high quality all-ceramic restorations entirely in Dr. Prather’s hands. Once we prepared your tooth, the CEREC system allows us to capture bite impressions digitally, so they’re immediately available to the CAD/CAM system where the impressions are used to design a precise dental crown that is then crafted in our in-office milling unit. When the restoration is completed, we immediately place your dental crown, so you’ll walk in with a damaged tooth and leave with a flawless smile.
CEREC has numerous advantages when compared with traditional dental crowns including:
